Primary Job Responsibilities:
- POSITION IS PART-TIME OR FULL TIME (NEGOTIABLE)
- Helps the on-site Histotech with histologic slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis by dermatopathologist : and sections of human tissue, cut, mount and stain tissue specimen received from internal dermatology clinics.
- Operates laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by dermatopathologist. Prepares slides of specimens, using specified stain, to enhance visibility under microscope.
- Prepares slides for ordered special stains.
- Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
- May study slides under microscope to detect deviations from norm and report abnormalities for further study.
- Maintains all laboratory quality control logs.
- Maintain laboratory readiness and compliance for CAP and CLIA accreditation
Compensation:
- Highly Competitive Hourly wages that commensurate with experience and market pay scale
Equipment Operated:
- Standard laboratory equipment including but not limited to ventilation hoods, tissue processors, microtomes, embedding stations, autostainers, manual strainers, coverslipper. Also includes routine office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.
Education/Licensure Requirements:
- Associates Degree or higher; ASCP certification (HT or HTL); Florida state licensure (Histotechnologist or Histotechnology Supervisor)
Work Environment:
- Medical laboratory, well lighted, well ventilated. Continual interaction with others. Occasional evening work.
Physical Requirements:
- Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with a laboratory including walking, bending, standing, lifting, reaching, and sitting for extended periods of time.
Compensation: $30.00 - $45.00 per hour
About Us
Meet Dr. Gurgen
Dr. Johnny Gurgen graduated with honors from Kean University in New Jersey before getting a medical degree from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He did his internship with a special emphasis in internal medicine before finishing his dermatology residency at Suncoast Hospital in Largo, Florida while serving as a co-chief resident.
He was awarded the Intendis Research Award and the Fifth annual North American Clinical Dermatologic Society Research Award in 2008. He was the winner of the Koprince Lecturer of the Year Award in 2009. Dr. Gurgen was also awarded the WDS Mentorship Grant in 2010 and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Fellowship, where he worked closely with experts in dermatology in Sydney, Australia and Monterrey, Mexico.
Dr. Gurgen has been published in multiple world-renowned dermatologists journals including the J of the American Academy of Dermatology, J of the European Academy of Dermatology, British Journal of Dermatology, Dermatologic Surgery and Cutis. He has given various poster presentations and lectures at national meetings, including the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology’s annual meetings. Apart from his scholar experience, he has been involved in giving back to the community by volunteering for various Melanoma Monday skin exams through the American Academy of Dermatology, as well as lecturing to high school students at the Progress Energy Great American Teach-in.
